Final Exam Question #4
Is a singles conference in Sin City a smart way to save souls or a set-up for a scandalous setback?
What happens in Vegas . . . may not stay in Vegas.
The characters you love—and love to hate—return for the fourth installment of the Wife 101 series! The Woods are up to their old tricks again, this time hosting a faith-based singles conference in the last place in the world any single person could stay out of trouble—Las Vegas, Nevada. Enticed by the excitement of the “second city that never sleeps,” Eric and Amber Hayes convince their unmarried friends and family to attend the conference in hopes of resolving the current chaos in their individual lives.
High school principal Tisha Dawson feels bamboozled when her plans for career advancement are blocked by the superintendent’s decision to place her at the worst school in the district. A trip to Las Vegas is just the distraction she needs while debating whether to wage a war against her boss and the county school board or walk away from a 15-year tenure. Nelson Hayes prides himself on being the ultimate ladies’ man. But when the one woman he’s never gotten over suddenly resurfaces in his life, it will take Vegas and a lot of prayer to pick up his broken pieces. Lena Henry is still sulking over her unfulfilled life and ring-less left hand. Not wanting to miss out on the fun, she jumps on the opportunity to experience the high stakes of Vegas, and to finally prove to her ex that he picked the wrong woman to marry.
All night parties, casinos that never close, and access to any adult fantasy one could ever imagine, these unsuspecting singles have only six days to choose between the allure of Sin City and being a sinner saved by grace.
Book Talk Stop Q&A
What was your biggest challenge while writing Singles 101?
The biggest challenge was the location. Singles 101 is Christian fiction, but the storyline primarily takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada a.k.a. Sin City. Readers of faith-based books expect the writing to remain within certain boundaries and parameters; however, it would've been completely unrealistic to have characters (Christian or not) travel to Las Vegas and not participate in some of the secular attractions of the city. Maintaining the integrity of a faith-based book while allowing the characters to be authentic wasn't an easy feat. I found myself constantly toeing the line and balancing the spiritual message against human behavior.
Which character do you think that readers will love to hate and why?
I think readers will love to hate Lena. Lena is the mother of Eric's daughter. In Husband 101, Lena was an antagonist, battling Eric in court for custody rights. In Singles 101, Lena returns as a main character with a point of view, but she's not all bad, neither is she all good. Lena is one of those people who could have a successful life if she only got out of her own way. I believe readers will have a love-hate relationship with her, wanting her to grow as an individual, but at the same time, wanting her to suffer consequences when she makes mistakes.
If you were to create a spin off of your newest book with one of your supporting characters, which one would it be and why?
In Singles 101, I introduce a supporting character named Sky who is somewhat of a cougar (older woman who likes younger men). She's a widow with three children, but she's unwilling to slow down and stop partying while she can still ʺget low.ʺ I think she would be an interesting character to develop further in a spin-off novel.
What is a hidden talent or pastime that you enjoy that would surprise others?
I really enjoy amusement parks and water rides. Take me to any theme park on a warm day and I'll ride the roller coasters, water slides, bumper cars...any ride as long as it doesn't go around and around in circles (I hate getting dizzy). And make sure we end the day with a funnel cake!
